Left relatively early this morning, and decided to skip breakfast and have it when we arrived at our chosen campsite. We decided on Torbay Inlet as its between Albany and Denmark, and will make a good base to explore for a few days. The campsite was only a short drive, and we soon found ourselves at the inlet trying to negotiate some very tight campsites with a lot of overhanging branches. We eventually managed to back our new baby in to a private den, surrounded by trees and only about 50 metres from the inlet.
We enjoyed breakfast and had a look around. I saw my first snake this trip and it was definitely a tiger snake. Luckily it slithered away into the tall grass and didn't seem to be interested in me.
In the afternoon we headed into Albany and Gadi picked up some helpful information and brochures at the Visitor's Centre. We then filled our water containers (we forgot to get water earlier) and drove to several lookouts including Mount Melville, Apex Lookout and the spectacular Mount Clarence and the National ANZAC Centre. The ANZAC Centre site is well worth a visit and is well laid out and very moving. The barracks is set out like a museum detailing the daily life experience of our soldiers (including authentic replicas of a kitchen, wash room and pantry), items belonging to The Light Horse Brigade and incredible personal stories of the brave young men who fought 'for King and country', including the Indigenous contribution. Outside the grounds contain many relics including cannons and torpedoes used to fight in WW1. We spent a lot of time exploring this incredibly moving place.
Picked up a few bits of shopping at the IGA on our way out of town, filled up fuel and headed back to our campsite as the night sky darkened. Luckily we had picked up a cooked chicken and only needed to cook some veggies to make a simple dinner tonight.
We are both tired out and ready to chill, and have an early night.
Night night, sweet dreams xx
