Set off early for us, (around 10.30am), did the usual (emptied the toilet, filled the tanks with water and filled my washing container, added wool mix - which you don't need to rinse out - added our dirty washing and put it in the ensuite to roll around on the floor, thus agitating) and finally headed towards Adelaide, back through Mount Barker and on to the freeway, then skirting around the east side of the city until we hit the northern highway straight up the coast.
We stopped for lunch at Port Parham, on the advice of fellow travellers, who told us that it was a great free camp, particularly for crabbing. We didn't like it at all - crowded, packed in like sardines and we could hear generators running (pet hate!) and worst of all the beach was horrible, especially as the tide was way out and it just looked ugly. This was not a place we even wanted to spend one night at!
We did some homework yesterday, looking at maps, brochures and the nomad bible apps Wikicamps and Camps Australia, to work out our best spot to stay with Easter around the corner.
We picked Port Julia, half way down the east coast of the Yorke Peninsula as it is a low cost camp close to the beach that gets very good ratings from previous travellers.
We drove on to Port Julia, about an hour from Port Parham, and despite the place being relatively busy, found a great spot surrounded by shrubs giving us privacy and shade. We set up properly as we are likely to spend a week here. Properly for us means putting out our outdoor C-gear matting (that is great to keep the campsite clean as it allows sand and dirt to fall through the weave and it also allows any grass underneath to breathe). Gadi also put up our privacy screen around our awning and rigged it so it gives us privacy to the front of our site but allows us to see the lovely trees and shrubs alongside us, giving us, in effect, a little garden of our own. After time to sit and enjoy a drink we hopped in the car to explore the nearby coast and catch the sunset before coming back and cooking a quick dinner. It is Monday night, so Gadi is inside watching his favourite ABC TV - Australian Story, Four Corners and Media Watch. I'm outside contemplating the sounds of the night (although it is broken by our TV and our neighbour's TV!) it's getting chilly, so I'm off inside to read and relax.
From the Zo-Mobil on the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia, good night xx
