Victor Harbor to Adelaide
Despite interesting cloud and sun patterns over the sea from our room when we awoke, looking inland it was a different story, low cloud and drizzle. Once we had crossed the peninsula though, it brightened up and more blue sky developed. The journey from the Fleurieu Peninsula to Adelaide was pretty with more vineyards and farmland until we met the suburbs of this relatively small city.
Our first destination was Mount Lofty which Mary had learnt about from one of the many guides we had collected. There was no information in the Australian guides we had. Standing at 727 metres above sea level it gave a magnificent view over Adelaide to the ocean and the surrounding countryside for about 230 degrees. The surrounding hills are clearly the home to the rich and famous with some amazing houses on the road.
Next to the apartment we are staying at on Melbourne Street and check in. It is a charming part of north Adelaide, near the Botanic garden and an avenue of cafés and bistros. We then drove around parts of the city to get an appreciation of the layout. We also took the opportunity of booking a restaurant that had been recommended to us overlooking the river. This proved to be excellent and much enjoyed. We had debated cancelling for another night as there was a free concert in the park by the Festival Theatre but by the time we learnt of this it was already filling up so we decided to go with the meal. The Adelaide Fringe Festival is on at the moment so the city has a real buzz about it. Apparently it's the second largest in the world after Edinburgh. The concert ended with the 1812 Overture and fireworks which we could hear from our apartment.
