A day in Victor Harbor
The weather has continued to frustrate our plans, but not enough to stop us enjoying our trip. We woke to overcast skies and a temperature of 13C again but undeterred we set off to explore Granite Island, a 62 acre island attached to the mainland in Victor Harbor by means of a causeway. We walked across and enjoyed a superb, if blustery, climb over the island watching crashing white waves on the shoreline and seeing some interesting flora. The island is home to little penguins and there were plenty of signs of their burrows even quite high on the cliffs. The island is a dedicated nature reserve and with such windy conditions we could not see any of the dolphins that are around or the seals on seal island a little further out. Perhaps the highlight of the morning was taking the horse-drawn tram back to the mainland over the causeway, at a speed just marginally faster than walking pace and seeing some sunshine.
After lunch we drove down the peninsula to Cape Jarvis watching one ferry go out and one come in from Kangaroo Island. We had originally planned to go over ourselves but after realising the logistics and cost of it decided not to. The prime reason was to guarantee seeing kangaroos and koalas but having had numerous sightings of both there seemed no need, and advice from people here was that it was not worthwhile.
Coming back we went up the north coast as far as Normanville and then through the Inman Valley. The road is lined with gum trees and provided a real contrast between the ocean environment of the east and the bush land scenery of the south-western peninsula. Coincidently, we saw more kangaroos coming this way.
Once back a relaxing end to the day with a glass of wine on our balcony overlooking a glorious sunny Endeavour Bay and the Bass Strait.
