Fraser Island
Up early as we are being collected at 07.05 for the day trip to Fraser Island, a world heritage area and the largest sand island in the world. With other passengers pick up we are at the ferry for the 08.30 departure to Kingfisher Bay and then on the island tour "bus" by 10.00. The tour "bus" is actually a lorry with a cab on the back. Once underway we almost immediately hit the sand tracks.
First stop, after a Zumba-style drive, is Lake McKenzie where some swim but we just paddle in the crystal clear freshwater lake surrounded by white sand, too cold to swim and not really the time. Then it's off to Central Station, once the hub of the islands logging industry and now a picturesque walking area with deafening cicadas for company. We enjoyed a superb lunch at Eurong before driving along the 75 Mile beach watching wild dingos roam before we see the shipwrecked Maheno and stop to explore the multi coloured sand at the Pinnacles and Eli Creek. Our driver was superb and finally took us back into the higher ground of the subtropical rainforest to view a sand blow which is an enormous sand dune stretching for miles inland before we boarded the ferry back to enjoy another outstanding meal cooked by Rocco and sleep.
A perfect day, especially as on the way to the ferry in the morning we saw a group of kangaroos in the distance in a field. On the way home, our driver, Butch stopped where a few were nearer for us to observe, just eating and jumping a hundred yards away. Awesome!
