Did a couple of dives with Ra Divers at Rakiraki. The corals were lovely and I was lucky to dive with just me and the Dive Master. We saw a turtle and a small reef shark on one of the dives but I was still finding it not quite up to what I had been hoping it would be.
Volivoli was very quiet. The staff seemed tense, apparently the owners were on site overseeing the build of their new motel at the back of the resort. It made for a poor atmosphere and I was glad to move on after the 3 nights were up.
We joined back on the Feejee bus for the last day. This was spent driving to what seemed a very remote area to have an indian lunch at a Indian run resort . We got to make our own roti´s and the lunch was, well, different. Afterwards we headed towards Nadi and the mudpools and hot spa´s. Unlike New Zealand, these mud pools were actually mud holes in the ground and the hot springs were also in the ground. The water was so hot, it was like getting into a bath. But sadly this all heralded the end of the Feejee Experience tour and yet again it was time for goodbyes - this doesn´t get any easier. Even though I had spent relatively very little time with my tour friends we had shared some fantastic experiences.
Back in Nadi, I still had just over a week before flying off to the States. Whilst travelling around the mainland I had been looking into where the best diving would be that was feasible for me to get to .... Kadavu was always the answer.
Kadavu is a large but remote island to the south of the mainland. Serviced by small by-planes and boats. There are no cars on island just villages and a few resorts specialising in diving. To the south of the island is the Astrolobe reef, reputedly one of the best reefs in Fiji, if not the world. Here the soft and hard corals are supposidly unspoilt and there is also the very real possiblity of seeing giant mantarey. That would just be the icing on the cake for me.
So, from Raffels Gateway I met Unasis from Rosie Tours who was incredibly helpful and fixed it up for me to spend 5 nights on Dive Kadavu a small resort on the island with a 3 day diving package. How exciting!!
