We arrived safely at our next stop Bombala just in time for lunch on another warm sunny day in the NSW south east corner. I say "safely" because it was my first time driving with the big girl in tow. It wasn't as bad as I thought, but will say it was a bit daunting. As we pulled into Cooma tom had taken us up a street and there was roadworks and a detour! It is a brain hurt, you are always concentrating and you have to be that much more aware of your surrounds and who and where everything is. I give James the thumbs up for doing such a good job driving us around this great big country.
Bombala is a small town renowned for its trout fishing and platypus. After talking to a few of the other campers we were onto a secret fishing spot!? Great this was our chance to even the score for the trip (which stands at zero for the record!) and catch some fish. Once again we tried hard for no reward, with not a fish in sight. Chelsea tried hard though and really enjoyed the morning on the river. She had got her cast down pat apart from the occasional wild one into the scrub, but hey she is four and fishing with an oversized rod. We had planned for a night out on the town, Bombala RSL here we come. Good food, cheap and will say the only place I have asked for a rum and got a nip in a shot glass put in front of me!! I do like a rum, but come on.
Bombala is the home to the highest density of platypus in NSW, so a visit to the Platypus reserve was something we had to do. Dusk and Dawn are the better times to view the platypus but we took our chances. There were several burrows in the banks opposite the platform that we concentrated our visual surveillance on. We were patiently waiting just looking for that v shape in the water and then there it was! We couldn't believe our eyes, to spot one in the middle of the day, luck was on our side.
Bombala was a good little stop with a small and cheap caravan park. Now cheap only in price as it was well and truly one of the cleanest and best looked after we have stayed in. We met the manager and he was more than helpful with local knowledge and a bit of a yarn. The cold was well and truly driven home to us here as well with a morning minimum of 1 degree on our first night stay.
Our next stop sees us say goodbye to the sky blue state and head down the Monaro Highway into the big"V" with our first stop at Cann River.
