Anish's Travels
Day 8 (18/03) (I just typed an entry, and i clicked summin, and its now gone, so here is take 2, in a bit of shorthand form)
Woke up 8.30am, had breakfast, packed, and left for Kanchanabari. Went on a bus, cost 85 Baht, about 1 pound 20 for a 3 hour journey, not bad hey. Although i was slowly being glued to my seat..and it was supposed to be an air con bus :S When we arricved at the bus terminal, we were approached by songthaew driver, well they are cyclists. They showed us a leaflet of a guesthouse, and we decided to go there. A songthaew is basicalled the front half of a bike, with a carriage attached on the back. Its 3 wheeled like a tuk-tuk, but the songthaew cyclists are far less annoying that the tuk-tuk people (This is being typed on the 20th March. I was wrong. A songthaew is not one of these cyclists. A songthaew is a truck thing with too benches at the back. I dunno what these cylists things are.) Our accommodation is wicked, bamboo huts on the river edge. Well the bit fo the river where all the dense plants and stuff grow (dunno what thats called)
"Attractively positioned, nicely furnished, en suite wooden huts, floating amongst a dense tangle of lotuses " From my guide book. We got a cool view aswell. We grabbed some lunch, and then went to the Tiger Temple. Had pictures take with various tigers, and there were also other animals around. Got some pictures of some peacocks aswell. We then we to the Bridge over the River Kwai which house the Thailand-Burma railway. This was built by allied prisoners of war and Asians labourers. Using picks, shovels, dynamite and pulleys they shifted 3 million cubic metres of rock, and built nine miles of bridges in 15 months. The railway has been nicknames "The Death Railway" so called because 16,000 POW's and 100,000 Asian labourers died whilst building it. We then went back to the guesthouse, and Heren decided to rent a motorbike (moped). I decided not to seeing as he's driven one before and i havent. So i just hoped on the back of his. Once i had realised what Heren'd driving skills were like, i held on for fear life. I swear i saw my life flash before my eyes....i'm gonna have a happy life :) We ended up gettin lost and were around for about 30-45 mins before we stopped and asked for directons. Some guy knew where the place was and told us to follow him, and so we did. We ended up back at the guesthouse, thankfully in one piece. Though we did get rather close to some cars that were driving next to us..rather scary..all good fun tho :) The driving in this country is insane. Its pretty much everyman for themselves. There doesnt seem to be any road rules, and horns are constantly going off. I cant believe i havent seen a crash yet. We could have had multiple crashes on the way up here in the bus. The following distances between cars is minimal and we were constantly changing lanes weaving in and out between cars. It was crazy!
Anyways that was about it for today. Tomorrow we going on a day tour..waterfall, cave etc. Should be good
Tell you all about it next time
Hope all is well back at home.
