Flight Failure!!
Today was leaving day so after getting up and finally being able to have a shower as the water was on we finished our final bits of packing and waited for the taxi we had arranged the previous day to arrive (or not as we were half expecting!). We were pleasantly surprised when at about 10.40 a red taxi pulled up and the guy we had spoken to yesterday said he was ready whenever we were. We double checked the room for items we may have forgotten, handed our keys in next door and jumped in the cab. The next 30-40 minutes were spent hurtling along the roads with the wind whipping in our faces as with little traffic in the way our driver made good speed to the Airport. We were there a few minutes trying to find the Spirit desk before giving up and asking at the info centre where they told us that no one would show up before 5pm as the flight out was at 8.20. They had changed our flights and we hadn't been informed and had nothing else to do but sit and wait for them to show up so we could find out what was going on. We managed to get Wifi at a little bar where I had a beer and sat watching the large flatscreen there that was showing an Aventura concert at Madisson Square Gardens, while Andy tried to contact Spirit via skype. As there was no answer, after several attempts he gave up and we went and got some food from McDonalds before at about 4.40 Spirit people started turning up. We went and checked in when they opened the gate at 5 and asked why our flight had been changed to which they replied that we had been informed of this in an email back in February! We went into their office and argues our case for at least an hour, saying we hadn't received the email and we had talked to Spirit in March when they had cancelled a load of our flights and at the time asked them if this one had changed, to which they replied no, it was the same. To cut a long story short they would do nothing for us and we left the office deciding we may as well go through security as there's never any telling how long this can take and we didnt want to miss the flight. Once through we went to the gate to find that the 20 minute delay we had been warned about had changed to a 2 ½ hour delay meaning we weren't going to leave until 11 at night, pretty much 12 hours after we got to the airport in the first place! Resigned to our bad luck we sat and waited until all of a sudden there was a mad rush to the desk by the gate and a lot of heated Latinos babbling too fast for us to understand. We went over to find out what was going on and discovered that they had just cancelled the flight!!! Seriously annoyed now we traipsed back through security and back to check in where 200 people were demanding to know what was going to happen etc. We slipped past them all and down the little corridor to the office we were in earlier thinking to avoid the queues and found there were only half a dozen people in there before us and the lady we had seen earlier was beginning to deal with them. We squeezed ourselves in, it was a very small office, and spent the next 2 hours getting pushed past, elbowed, trodden on and generally ignored as if we didn't exist until finally we were seen along with several other 'non latinos' who were in the same boat and being treated in the same way. After so much more hassle, angry Latinos shouting and making a scene and waiting for another few hours, by 2am finally we were given tickets on another airline to fly direct to New York, arriving at a similar time to what our revised flight would have, just minus the stop over in Flauderdale! 3.30am we checked our bags in, got through security again and waited to board our flight with JetBlue.
