Flea Market
We walked into the Colonial Centre to look for a flea market which we had read about on the internet. We found the Plaza with few problems but as has been the case so often on our travels the market we were after was nowhere to be seen, we're not sure if it is gone completely or just there during tourist season. The Plaza itself was very pretty though and flanked on one side by a very old looking building which I presume dates from the original Spanish colonisation, we spent some time walking around this area looking at the colonial style buildings, finding a club we had been told plays salsa on Tuesdays and occasionally walking out through the city walls to admire them from the other side, there is no doubt that the buildings are very pretty but nothing which particularly stood out after 6 months in Latin America other than they seem to be in worse condition than most. Our short tour ended back at Plaza Colon where we decided to be touristy and sit at one of the bars for a drink and have some olives to nibble on. It's a very pleasant square to sit in looking across at the old cathedral, with enough people and things going on to be interesting without losing it's relaxed feel. The bar seemed reasonably priced too, until we got the bill that is and found that like America the prices didn't include tax, which ended up being almost 25% of the bill, needless to say we were not impressed by this and won't be returning. We went back to the apartment where we decided that since our day was turning into a failure we might as well catch up on our blogs, find out how to get to the beach, and several other things we needed to do. This ended up taking the rest of the day because of the unreliable internet connection, something which has driven us mad throughout our travels in South America!!
