We started out early today in order to travel up to the top of Mt. Wellington that overlooks Hobart. The view was fantastic. We needed some exercise so took a little hike at the top, enjoying the fresh air, and cool temperatures. One of the treasures of Hobart. Port Arthur was our destination today and we were in for a surprise. Unbeknownst to us we would be travelling through some terrible devastation. More of that later. First though, the convict story in the creation of Australia is an important and compelling one. Few convicts shared the same fate, and we heard of a few. Most that were transported to Australia, worked hard, bided their time, won their freedom and helped establish the new colonies as fine citizens...

Arrived in Hobart midday and immediately headed to town. Apparently Horbartians flock to the waterfront like seagulls to chips so our first duty of the day was to check that out. Took a stroll around Battery Point, had lunch at Irish Murphy's (just had to, to celebrate Simon's heritage), and then took a wonderful tour around Hobart by car to see how the local folk live.
