Port Arthur was our destination today and we were in for a surprise. Unbeknownst to us we would be travelling through some terrible devastation. More of that later.
First though, the convict story in the creation of Australia is an important and compelling one. Few convicts shared the same fate, and we heard of a few. Most that were transported to Australia, worked hard, bided their time, won their freedom and helped establish the new colonies as fine citizens. However, others were not so lucky and spent their lives in the penal system. All in all though, convicts and the free labour they provided in the establishment of Australia provides an interesting and awesome story. Many of the stories we heard of the convicts and what happened to them when they arrived here frightened and amazed us as to the strength of some of these men. Much of the work they did in the early 1800's is still visible today. If you have a chance do a little research, it's very interesting.
The other amazing experience we had today was viewing the devastation of the fires during the last month in Tasmania. The trip to Port Arthur is about 100 km and half of that travelling area has been destroyed by fire. The trip turned into a sobering one because we knew there had been fires in the area but were unaware of the extent. As we drove along and viewed the burned out fields, homes, businesses and forests that went on and on and on as far as the eye could see in some locations we just couldn't talk anymore. The devastation is mind boggling, yet people are optimistic and hopeful that they will recover. For example, the elementary school that burnt to the ground has been erected in the form of portables and will be ready for the children when they return to school on the 27th. Amazing!! I've posted some pictures .. What a day...
Temp 21C sun, cloud and some rain that the locals are delighted to have. It is still very dry here.
