Alli & Pete's Adventures
Another 11 days has flown past, our time in India is running out very quickly now, probably because we are enjoying it so much ... but we will definitely be back ! We went to Ruby's 18th and were sat in a back room to eat the food before everyone else, with twice as much food as everyone else was given, the custom in India for visitors as they treat them like gods. The next day we went to visit Anil and his wife and their new baby daughter Tassou, she looked much bigger than Kalpena's baby Anouska as she was born right on time, we had chai and sweet cakes to celebrate with them. Beeru took us shopping in Jhansi and we bought Nepalese jumpers for our sponsored kids, using donations we had been given, it was wonderful when we took them up to the colony this week to distribute and they had such grateful smiles without all the 'grabbing' for things that other kids usually do in the bigger cities in India. My friend Tiger (a tour guide) bought me a Salwargupta, which is casual Indian attire, so I will make sure I wear it whilst in Rajasthan this week. I also got a new blouse made for the saris I had purchased in Chanderi the week prior, so I managed to wear two different Saris this week ... one to a belated birthday party we had for Pete (where everybody bought him a present except me, so I am still feeling embarassed now!), the other sari I wore up the colony to say hello to the kids & their families and the mothers all went to get lipstick and bindis (for the forehead) to put on me ... by the time I got from the hotel to the colony, my sari had been changed three times already, as everybody thinks they know which style is best, so I still don't know how to actually dress myself in one yet !!! One more shopping expedition in Jhansi this week saw Pete buying Beeru a gold chain & pendant ... actually it came free with something he bought and it's not real gold, but Beeru loves it and shows it off to everyone, saying Pete is his "accha dost" (best friend) ... so now Indu is jealous and wants me to buy him one too !!! Beeru took Pete & I fishing one day, but Beeru pulled his rod out of the water so often that I'm not surprised they caught no fish that day, luckily it was a serene place and worth visiting anyway. The next day was another of the many festivals I have seen in Orchha, this time it was the Ram Raja Marriage Festival, where everybody wants to choose this date to get married because it is the same day as for one of the gods. There were about 25 weddings in Orchha this day, so the musical processions that evening were loud and continued until about 2am, along with 200 dancing horses and other festivities. We have done lots of sightseeing this week, so I will add another postcard entry tomorrow night. Bye for now.
