Alli & Pete's Adventures
The past few days have been a mixture of highs and lows. There have been about half a dozen days in the past 10 weeks when I have wondered if I am making any progress at all, with two of these days happening this week ! Of course, when I look back on my diary as I type it each week, I am constantly reminded of the improvements that we have made in such a short time and yes it is all definitely worth it. Sometimes it's just listening to other people that say things won't change that brings me down, but then these people will always exist everywhere in the world. Anyway, Pete & I decided to fast-track the progress this week, fuelled by my impatience and Pete's determination and some very generous donations I received from four tourists. Over the past 10 weeks, I have watched the kids at the colony school very closely, in trying to determine which have the most chance to improve if they are given opportunities for the future other than simply getting married at a young age and producing more children they can't afford to feed, in particular I have targeted the 8-10 year old girls that I think could be helped significantly. We have now drawn up a budget for 10 children to be sponsored for one year, so that we know what funds need to be raised to help provide this education, especially when in this first year teaching materials etc will need to be purchased as an initial set-up cost. I selected 6 girls to receive additional tuition, we let the teachers choose 1 girl and 1 boy that are the poorest at the colony school, so we currently have 8 kids which started receiving 3 hours extra tuition each on Friday ... and we are going to let the teachers choose 2 more kids to join this class starting from Monday. I was thrilled to see on Saturday at they were all waiting for their second class at least 10 minutes before it was due to start, even Rajkumaree who rarely attended the colony school before, as she is beautiful and could make too much money begging at the temple in town to bother coming to school ! The sight of their faces, excited that they were chosen as 'special' kids to receive extra tuition, was plenty enough to make me feel good again about the work we are doing here in Orchha. Apart from the charity work, we have been kept very busy this week, with Pete starting Indian cooking classes every evening whilst I now go to Hindi language lessons at the same time. We are in Jhansi today to get a birthday present for my friend Ruby who turns 18 years old today, also a friend Anil at the resort is now a proud father of a baby girl and we want to get her a nice little outfit to wear. We are off sightseeing again tomorrow with my friend Indu, so I will have lots more photos to put on the website again next week. Oh, I nearly forgot to mention, I had my first hangover yesterday from drinking far too much Indian Whiskey with my friends !!!
