Alli & Pete's Adventures
A couple of major things have happened in the last week in Orchha, with the rest of the week a continuation of me feeling really crap and not doing much other than sleep an awful lot ! First of all, my friend Kalpena (a teacher) had a baby girl, she still hasn't named her yet and just calls her 'baby Alli'. She is the tiniest baby I have ever seen, but she has the longest fingers and lots of hair on her head already, she is beautiful. The next big event was on Tuesday when it was Diwali, the Hindu version of Christmas. I had a wonderful day, getting dressed up in my new sari and going to my friend Indu's family home for dinner that evening. He said everybody was really impressed that I made the effort to dress in traditional Indian clothes, they all kept taking photos of themselves with me when we were dancing and eating etc. Before dinner, my friend Beeru took me to his house for Puja (prayers) first, where I sat and watched the extraordinary lengths people go to in lighting numerous candles and placing fruit around images of their gods, then placing their wallets and my purse next to the goddess Lashkmee to pray for wealth. After this, we went to Indu's house where they also performed Puja before dinner. It was really nice to be invited to be part of their special celebrations that evening. They asked me to stay the night at Indu's family home, which I did. All the girls slept in one house and the guys in another. There were 5 of us sleeping on 2 cots pushed together and they were all trying to be the lucky one that got to sleep next to me ! Yesterday was the first day where I took over the teaching of kids at the Poor Colony. I took the kids some new writing and spelling books, watched them repeat the alphabet over and over, then decided that they need to do more than this so I took over. I am now going to teach them every day, so they learn lots of English words quicker. Yesterday was the day where I felt the most energy I have for the last 10 days, so I must be on the mend now. What makes it even better now is that this Saturday I am catching the train to Mumbai (Bombay) to pick up a very special person, stay tuned for the next update on this one !!!
