The past few days Mol,Bek and I have been travelling around Brussels ourselves, as Laura is so busy studying. We found a really cheap falafel store that takes two trains and a bus to get to. For four euros you get three freshly cooked falafels in thick pita bread and a bowl for the salad bar. You can fill up your bowl as much as you like with the assorted salads. We're basically regulars now. I also sussed out the best coffee house in Brussels called Aksum! It's been so long since I've had a proper latte here in Europe. Bek and I absolutely loved them!
On Friday Laura took us to a bar where the specialty is fish bowls. She knows the owner and we only had to pay 10 euros for our majito. It was like drinking a plant because of all the peppermint leaves and limes swimming around the bowl. We then changed bars and got some Belgium beer. We found out the hard way that you shouldn't drink spirits then beer. It was a big night and we got
home late, but Laura needed a break from studying!
We've also visited the musical instrument museum. There were 3 different floors in the building filled with different types of instruments. They dated back to the 1700's, 1800's and 1900's. When you stood in front of an instrument, you would hear the sound it makes in your audio guide. I really liked hearing all the different accordians play. They reminded me of Paris. Some of the intruments looked so weird. I found a violin type thing that had one string, and a trombone with a snake head attached to the end of it!
Today we were supposed to visit Bruge but the weather has been quite s***e. It was raining yesterday and today with thunder. At least it's not as cold and windy like in Melbourne. It looks like the suns coming out now, yay.
So today we caught the metro into town to have a look around the shops. I bought a new skirt but the other shops weren't that spesh. We ate at our fav place Mr.falafel, and noticed next door there's a bookstore called Pele Mele. I think we were inside looking around for about an hour. All their CDs, records and books are dirt cheap. They had a stack of singles on vinyl for 25 cents each! I ended up buying this really interesting book called Musicophillia. It's about people with neurological conditions and how they can appreciate music more or in a different way. And also how the power of music can heal patients. The first chapter is about a guy who got struck by lightening and then begins to hear piano music in his head all the time. It's so good I can't put the book down!
Anyway as I'm talking about a book it's obvious that there isn't much else to do here. We've done it all. It will be a nice change to go to Amsterdam on Thursday and explore a new place.
Just quickly last night we went rollerblading. It was sick! I can't remember the last time
I put on a pair of clunky skates and rolled down a hill. I'm about to go out again with Molly.
Keep posted,
Xoxo Alice
