It's great to be back on the road again after meeting our friends, Royce & Sheryl in Katherine and then heading west on the Victoria Highway towards WA! We have never driven this way before and have been amazed at the beautiful landscape along this route - particularly all the boab trees! They are such amazing trees and remind us of the 'tree forest' in the Lord of the Rings movies. The weather is still warm to hot - on average around 30 degrees, but drops off at night. Not cold like Alice Springs or Brisbane at the moment!!! So we're having an endless summer! We found a great little camping spot about 50km of dirt road off the main highway at Jasper Gorge and were shocked and pleased that we were the only ones there, as the highway freecamps were like the Westfield carpark!! So this was the perfect opportunity for Alf to surprise Royce & Sheryl with a 16 shot fireworks display! Boys and their toys! It was a magical moment though to see the lights in the black night sky and no one else around.
We then went on to the Keep River National Park which is only 3km from the WA border, but a 16km dirt road to get to the campsite. What a wonderful place for bush camping! We had a great site (last ones -phew) with the mountains as our backdrop. The sites aren't crowded and once it's full, then no more can come in, so it's a very relaxed, quiet place. From the campsite we could do a great 2km loop walk through the rocky landscape. We loved it so much that we did it 3 times over the 3 day visit! We also drove to another section of the park for a 7km early morning walk, which was also a real treat! Campfire cooking and fresh bread too - yum!
