Back into the red dust again on the Tanami Road to Alice Springs - 1055km! The first section of the Tanami was quite 'rocky', so Alf decided to stop and lower the tyre pressures even further to prevent the tyres from damage and for a smoother ride. As he was checking the pressures, he heard some hissing from the rear car tyre and found that we'd just had a puncture, but praise God we discovered it before it burst, completely damaging the tyre! This is the first puncture we've had in over 30 years of outback travel! We met a guy who stopped and said that he had had two punctures on this same section of road some time ago too.
On this section of road we almost ran over 2 emus which darted unexpectedly out from the scrub - after our initial fright, we laughed when we pictured how the first emu sort of pulled in his behind to avoid our bull bar (a bit like doing the 'limbo')!
We continued on to spend the night at Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater. This is the second time we've been here and it is still an amazing sight. (We haven't watched the movie and are not frightened by camping here!) This time we did an early morning walk down into the centre of the crater. We also spottted a 'Major Mitchell Cockatooo' - I've always hoped I would see one of these.
Then it was a long day's drive through the red, sometimes corrugated, dirt road to our campspot for the night - an old gravel pit where we could watch an amazing sunset and hoped to see camels or dingoes as we could see their footprints in the dirt - but no luck!
Crossing over the border into the Northern Territory, we realised we have spent about 3 months touring through Western Australia! Wow, it's such a huge state and we've only seen one part of it! Beautiful!
Early start the next day for our final leg of the Tanami into Alice Springs. Passed Yuendumu but didn't go into the community this time. We had a guess on how many caravans would use the Tanami and we counted 12, which we thought was quite surprising as it's quite rough in places.
