Yay, we have finally arrived in Western Australia after being searched and any leftover fruit & veges, as well as honey, confiscated at the border (thank goodness we had been warned). Our first destination was the lovely Lake Argyle Resort overlooking the magnificent Lake Argyle which is 18 times the size of Sydney Harbour, and was created by the construction of a dam on the Ord River in the late 1960's. This oasis appears to be the crossover for travellers heading east and west as it is a beautiful place to refresh and recharge before continuing on your journey. The views are just so amazing that no photo can capture the full beauty. We had heard lots of positive comments about the 'infinity pool' and we were not disappointed, although I was the only one of us to brave the icy cold water! I couldn't pass up the opportunity to experience a dip in such a beautiful location.
Royce & Sheryl have brought along a zodiac dinghy, so this was their first opportunity to set it up for a tour on the lake as well as a bit of fishing. With a bit of practice, we may be able to shorten the time taken to set up and dismantle, however it was worth the effort and we had a great time and even caught a few fish - garfish and sooty grunter (although all but one got off the line before we could get it in the net!).
A highlight of our stay at Lake Argyle was a sunset cruise on the 'Kimberley Durack' - named after the son of the original landowners in the late 1800's and the pioneer of the damming of the Ord River. We were taken to areas where the freshwater crocodiles are most likely found and were excited to see a few up to 3 metres in length. Apparently there are about 30,000 freshwater crocodiles in the lake and they can grow up to 4m in length due to the abundance of food for them (insects). Our guides, Josh & Jack also took us fish feeding, walleroo spotting and the highlight of the trip, swimming in the middle of the lake with some wine and nibbles while watching the sunset A very relaxed and satisfying afternoon!
