After my 20 hour flight via Dubai, gaining 6 hours of time, a train, sky train and a tuk tuk later I strolled into Soi Rambutti just off Khoa San road to the Wild Orchard accommodation I had booked for my first night.
It was really weird having been around people around me the whole time and now it was just me in probably the strangest city I could think of. It felt a bit isolated in the hotel so I decided to book into a guest house the next day.
A tuk tuk driver approached me and offered me a package. As I had no clue about the city, I agreed. He took me to some tour agency and then on the way from there I realised I didn't have my mobile on me. We went back to the guest house, it wasn't there. I then went to the hotel where I asked them about it, I was sure I left it in the room. The reception lady kept on telling me to sit down and every time I found myself pacing and praying that I would get my phone back. This was the first miracle of my trip...my prayer was answered when the cleaning lady came back from lunch with my phone in her pocket. She handed it over to me...wow I was so relieved and just sat on the stairs in tears, as this was effectively my first day of travel and being cut off from the world would not be that great.
The tuk tuk driver and I tried again, he took me to the Golden Mount. The gazillion steps up the Golden mount rewarded me with the most amazing views of Bangkok.
Next was The Grand Palace Was magnificent with an emerald Budha that was tiny, placed almost as high as the roof. All the temples have been hand tiled with glass to give it a shiny effect. Before I could get in I had to stand in a queue to get a shirt to cover up my bare shoulders as they no longer accepted sarongs. In the queue I met two Malayan ladies, they seemed like fun and we went through the palace together.
After we decided juice at a cool place with wifi was in order. We then went for a massage on Khoa San Road at lovely place. The lady I got asked me if it as my first Thai Massage which of course it was for me. She proceeded to walk on my back and did all the stretches and pulling that comes with it. At one point I must of sighed or something as she said "I kill you, I kill you so you remember me", well she was right I don't think I could easily forget that. We went for dinner, the girls ordered as they know the local foods better than me, was lovely. I said bye the girls and agreed to see them when I was going to be in Malaysia.
Was picked up early to go to the floating markets of Dumnden Saduak, an hour's ride from Bangkok. Once there we were transported by longboat to the place where the markets where, surprisingly though these were all on-land with random boats standing on the side, I'd say this is a classic tourist trap.
We arrived back early afternoon. Realising how cheap their mani's/pedi's and massages were I had to "start" my trip in style, so my nails looked glam and I felt pretty relaxed. I took my luggage to the train station and stored it there. Off to china town, which I thought was rougly like any other china town I've seen. As China town was closing I took a bus to MBK (the largest shopping centre in Bangkok) and had myself a curry there. Mmm one meal I should probably have skipped. After my exploring was done
I made it back to the train station in time for my 9:40pm overnight train to Chiang Mai which only left at 10:30pm.
