Woke to a wonderful sunny day in Coimbra, 9.30am start with everyone smothered in sun cream and comfortable walking shoes ready for an interesting and packed day. Started off at bibliotea Joanina, what an amazing place, could not take pictures :( but found some on the web check out bibloteca joanina, so many books, such an ornate library with a prison underneath it, but a prison with a difference - the richer population were the only ones chosen to go there so that they could continue learning, whilst the general population were not allowed to go there. Looked around more of the university buildings - students said it looked like Harry Potter could have been filmed there :) such old buildings so full of history, great guides - thank you to Mario and Tanya for arranging these visits and for showing us around them :) after lunch we went to an old convent and learned the history of it, about how it flooded and the need to re-build in a different location. Thirty minutes to get ready for the football match at Coimbra Academica stadium 1-1 draw, great game :) then off for a quick bite to eat before heading to the supermarket to buy supplies for our picnic down by the river tomorrow, a chill out day with our first visit into the town itself, Helen has promised everyone an ice-cream :) and a boat trip if possible.
Everyone here is great from the hotel staff to all our tutors and the staff connected to the farm, they are all so kind and have made us feel so welcome :)
