On our way to Chianciano Terme we stopped at Ravenna to visit the church of St Apollinaris in Classe which houses some of the finest mosaics in Italy. It was built in the 4th century & is very unique in that even though a Christian Church there are definite influences of early pagan churches. We have just had 2 lovely nights in Chianciano Terme, a lovely hillside town famous for it's therapeutic springs. We were staying in a quiet hotel just on the edge of town which was lovely & relaxing. Even left our window open of a night so didn't need air conditioning which was great. Best sleep yet. There is an older section & a newer part of town built side by side. It looks like somewhere that's frequented by Italians rather than overseas visitors. Had a great feel about it, I'd happily return here sometime. We had a lovely dinner at an old farmhouse that had been restored & were treated to 0 kilometre foods as they were sourcing all foods locally as well as seasonally. Charlie's highlight was the wild boar casserole! Prior to that we visited Montepulciano, a small hillside town near our dinner venue. It was very beautiful & had many similarities to Assisi although not as big or grand churches. Yesterday we had a lovely sleep in, wandered up town, had a swim, finished my book then went for another late afternoon walk. Last night our tour guide Gian Franco hosted drinks for us on our verandah overlooking the pool then we shared dinner together, a most relaxing day overall! We've met some lovely people on this trip!
