From Orvietto we crossed the River Tiber to arrive at St Mary of the Angels Basilica, Assisi, which was erected where St Francis died. We actually saw the 3 churches contained in that space one above the other. Was especially interested to see the stone tomb that St Francis is buried in. As well as wandering through the delightful streets of the hillside town of Assisi we also saw St Clare's Cathedral. The murals contained in the churches here are great, just a shame that some were lost after a plague centuries ago & an earthquake more recently. After a relaxing few hours we headed to the Old Town of Perugia where we've stayed for the next 2 nights. In the late afternoon we had a simple tour around town, the most fascinating part for me were the Roman ruins that had been dug out under the present town. It was incredible how intact they were considering the passing of time. Yesterday was a quieter day for us as we chose not to go to Cortona. Instead we did some more exploring around town then had a nice slow afternoon. In the evening we headed to an awesome restaurant called Il Molino which was in yet another small hill town nearby called Spello. The dinner was outstanding, the best we've had so far in Italy. Another lovely couple of days, have met some great people on tour so far.
