After leaving the glitzy Monaco on Saturday we headed to the quaint hillside town of St Paul de Vench just south & inland from Nice. There we wandered the narrow cobbled streets & overlooked the Mediterranean in the distance. We saw some beautiful art work by Michel Degav which we would have loved to bring home, vibrant colours & beautiful scenes. From there we followed the Cote D'Azur to Aix en Provence(the home of Cezanne)where we spent 3 hrs exploring. Although still clear & sunny a very strong wind blew up about this time called the Mistral, supposedly from Siberia, was certainly cool! Has been the 1st really cool day we've had all trip! The walled city of Avignon was our final destination for the day & home for the next 3 nights. While there we saw the Palace of the Pope (the alternative Papal residence for 2 centuries in time past as well as the famous Pont D'Avignon, the bridge from the famous French song. We also spent an afternoon of wine tasting as well viewing the 2000 Yr old Roman aqueduct of Pont du Gard, very impressive. Nimes nearby was delightful with it's intact Roman temple in the town square & Arles' Colosseum & amphitheatre are still regularly used. In between the above we shared some nice downtime with reading, napping & some easy round town exploring. Charlie was happy to see that the Wallabies got up in a close game against Sth Africa on Sunday. Next week the test will come against NZ! Yesterday we also enjoyed a drive through the Camargue, a reclaimed coastal area to the sth, famous for it's bull fighting, cowboys, gypsies, wild horses & bulls as well as flamingoes. The area had a definite Spanish feel about it both in terms of the people & the food/housing. The coastal town of Les Saintes Maries de la Mer (supposed landing place of Jesus' disciples following his death) was very Spanish with its traditional church & gypsies in the courtyard. The beach was lovely & the day very warm now the wind had dropped. Each day of our journey has brought beautiful new experiences & delightful sights.
