From Avignon we travelled further south past lots of fertile land until reaching the Languedoc region which is steeped in history. Martin, our guide shared many snippets of information about the region. I was keen to see this area after having read Kate Mosse's 'Labyrinth'. We had a lovely three hours in Carcassonne where Charlie & I shared a delicious duck cassoulet for lunch. Carcassonne has a fairytale appearance with its witch hat turrets & surrounded by its imposing wall. We enjoyed exploring the tiny backstreets & wondering what life would have been like in its early days. From there we continued our wander towards our destination for the day, Albi. We visited the impressive Basilica, one of the largest brick buildings in the world where every inch of it's internal walls are covered with the original artwork remains untouched & intact. We had a mooch around town then a lovely relaxed evening back at our quaint little hotel with drinks in the garden followed by a lovely dinner.
