Today we visited Ephesus and enjoyed the sprawling landscape of the largest and best preserved ruins in Turkey, far more impressive than those left of Troy which were damaged through primitive excavation techniques. It has wide paved streets lined with giant pillars and various buildings with friezes, including the Gate of Hercules and the Temple of Artemis which was one of the seven wonders of the world. We sat on the ancient toilets which leave very little privacy. No chance for relief for the ancient Romans suffering from stage fright. Then we walked down the main street to see an enormous open theatre which is still used for performances. While we were sitting there a few brave souls sang to an audience and we had the opportunity to hear the clarity of their voices from a fair way up. We didn't participate so no stupid antics this time... far too hot for clowning about. You know, yesterday I was feeling a little "ruined-out" but Ephesus is well worth the time and has set the standard. From the top of the hill looking down the main street towards the Library I could easily picture Ephesus in all it's glory as a bustling city. Even the hoards of tourists strolling around merely added to the effect. I doubt we'll see anything to top it until we reach the Acropolis in Athens.
We're spending a couple of nights in Selcuk which is a short distance from Ephesus. We've scored well with this one... free use of the adjacent hotel pool and bar which has incited us to enjoy a few of the local bevies. Tomorrow we'll probably visit the local museum of archaeology and then enjoy an afternoon of rest and relaxation before heading off East to Pumukkale and Hierapolis.
