Another day... another beautiful beach. We just spent the last four days on a Gullet, a traditional Turkish yacht, which took us from Fethiye, past Kas and on to Myra. Our days mainly consisted of lying about on the cushioned deck in the sun drinking beer, leaping in to the turquoise ocean for a swim, playing backgammon and exploring the islands and ports we stopped at along the way... oh, and of course eating the regular meals cooked by the crew. Our boat had an eclectic mix of people from all over the globe, but we seemed to connect most with these three young Kiwi guys. It was excellent timing to have them around to break up the conversation and diffuse the ever growing cabin fever, no pun intended. The entire trip was so relaxing and well, cruisy... pun intended! :)
Now we're settled in Olympos, which has a beautiful beach with accommodation in the form of tree houses. It's like the Ewok village... except there's no storm troopers and everyone drinks beer and sunbathes rather than chant and play bongo drums. Still the same amount of hair around. I really like this place. The place we're staying at is called Saban Pension and is run by a lovely couple. Food is the best we've had yet and all you can eat, BOMB!!! We all go back for seconds and thirds and then laze about gorged playing cards. It's pretty subdued at the moment. We've been told that only a week ago every pension and tree house was filled with Aussies and Kiwis who travelled down directly from Gallipoli to enjoy this magnificent place and I can imagine it was an out of control down under party village.
Today is our last day in Olympos. Sad to leave cos it's been so relaxing and comfortable. Okay I should say here that we didn't actually stay in a tree house, because there were so many bungalows available they gave us one for the same price, although we only slept there. During the day we're either in the tree huts or sitting on the beach. Although today we actually exerted some energy walking to Chimaera, a mountain with natural burning gas producing flames from holes in the rock face. Nobody really knows why the exist or how they seem the re-light themselves even after they've been put out by rain or people. Paul lit a couple of holes which was much like lighting a stove after leaving the gas on for too long... WOOF!!! Scared the crap out of him... hehehe. Phil being the ideas man chose to light his cigarette on one and almost seared off his eyebrows. Just to make the experience that little bit stranger, on the way home it began to piss down with rain. A torrential thunderstorm with rain drops the size of acorns. Then not long before we made it back to our pension the clouds part like some cruel joke from God and out comes the glistening sun to tease our sodden bodies with warmth. Too little too late, Mate!
So here we are with drenched shoes and packed bags waiting for our bus to arrive. Not looking forward to the 12 hour night bus ride to Cappadocia which is in the middle of Turkey, but from all reports it is definitely worth the journey.
Catch ya later alligator, don't forget your toilet paper... literally, as it's not always supplied!
