Lombok is basically just mountains with shacks and towns built within. It is a lot poorer than the other places we have been.
Arrived at same same bungalows in Kuta Lombok 4pm Sunday. Had our own bamboo shack. Walked through town to the beach - lots of locals and kids playing. Not many tourists. Stopped for some chilli beef springrolls with a mayo sauce, which are really nice.
Afterwards we took a walk and clearly in the wrong direction as nothing was around us for about a mile! One local stopped at the side of us on his scooter full of trees and asked us where we were going as we must of looked lost. We replied 'don't really know' he told us to walk back as it was a long walk to the next town. By the time we got back to our bungalow it was dark. Decided after a long day to have a nice civilised night in reading and researching.
The next day we had decided to hire a moped so we could explore everything and after all this is the only means of transport!
The lady showed us to our bike and basically said 'ok go'. We were like ok how so do we use it haha. With her very basic description I hopped on the bike and had a little ride. It was quite wobbly but ok. She leaves us to it and as soon as she had gone I turned the wheel hit a bump and decked it! Myself and the bike on the floor in the dirt. Luckily it was in slow motion and I was ok, the bike too. This instantly put me off driving it. Kirstie got on with caution and said she would try it out see how she feels. After some thinking we thought let's just go for it. So off we headed onto the main street (Kirstie driving) went along the road we had walked yesterday at no more than 30mph to start with. It seemed like we had been driving for ages and there wasn't really a lot around just traditional sasak villages. You know you have took a wrong turn when locals start waving at you in astonishment :/ Trying to ask for directions was also difficult as both of us were speaking different languages. Then by chance we found a sign for a beach so we took that thinking we might start to see people and tourism again. This was not the case and we didn't even make it to the beach before heading back the way we came from. We had tried to access it but the road was still being built and we only realised this when we drove the moped off it. We came to a skidding stop, legs spread out either side trying to balance the bike. Again, don't worry we were ok :) Getting back up the hill we wasn't sure the bike was going to make it only going 10mph. But it did. After around 2hrs we made it back to our starting point and tried again this time we looked at a map (probably should of done this first!) We were now heading in the right direction and came across all the things listed on our map. We stopped at the top of a mountain for a smoothie and a bite to eat, the views were incredible! Last stop was the secluded paradise beach we had picked out, set in a little cove with crystal clear turquoise waters. We stayed there for the rest of the day before heading back and ending the day with a nice meal and drinks.
We were proud. We had survived the day on the bike with no real disasters. We think it will be the first and last day though!!
Moped cost: 50,000Rp
Petrol: 10,000Rp
Great stay in Lombok - completely different to the rest of Indonesia. Nice to see a place less touristy. Would of liked to of seen the very active volcano that keeps shutting Bali airport but it was too far. Maybe next time.
Heading back on the fast boat to Bali then catching our flight to Singapore.
We will be sad to leave Indonesia it's been a great first place to stay despite the mishaps. We have barely scratched the surface here. I think you need a month at least, to see it all properly.
Speak soon.
