Friday 18th - Sunday 20th December
On Friday morning first stop was the crocodile infested Adelaide River where we joined a cruise looking for the jumping variety. We weren't long from the jetty and we found our first lady with the meat over the side she didn't disappoint leaping high out off the water in an attempt to grab the meat. Along the way we fed 3 more crocs, about 50m in front off the boat one off the 6m males popped up and then disappeared was fricken HUGE!!!!!!! On the way back to the jetty we fed the whistling kites (the aborigines call them the fire birds as during bush fires they spread embers to keep the fires burning and flush out the prey they eat). It was awesome to see wild crocs doing wild things as the jumping out off the water thing isn't for the feeding they do it naturally to grab animals out off trees and birds / bats from the air.
So back at the campsite on Friday we made the tough decision to leave the car in Darwin and fly to Perth as the 8 days lost were cutting into our trip a little too much and we had already missed out on visiting a few places that we really wanted to see. The car company were a little more helpful and we arranged the Saturday drop off and booked a Monday flight to Perth.
Saturday was an early start as we wanted to be sorted before it got too warm. We had lots off stuff having thinking the car would still be with us into WA anyways we packed the bags and left a lot off stuff in with a free for all sign on it. So we dropped the car off and checked into a hostel the Meluca on Mitchell Street which was awesome. Good security and even a resident blue tongue lizard called Morphus, we dropped the bags off and had a dip in the rooftop pool which was awesome, we had a walk along through the park and up towards the revamped Darwin harbour - before returning to the room quickly for some aircon as it was sooooooooooooo bloody hot and sticky and humid but hey were in the NT.
On Sunday 20th we made the short trip to crocsaurus cove to spend the morning amongst giant crocodiles and reptiles. The reptile place was cool with some wicked geckos and snakes. We watched the giant 5½ metre crocs get fed and looked at the tiny baby crocs. One off the really cool things that you can do is dangle a fishing rod over the side of the juvenile croc tank with meat on the end and watch them jump for it. We decided following lunch and needing to cool down to head to the wave pool on the harbour which was so much fun, we passed some of the building destroyed by cyclone Tracey in the 70's along the way. Finally back at the hostel in the evening we packed and went to bed early with the 5 am start pending the next morning.
