Hokey Dokey, here I am back in New Delhi and the famous Pahar Ganj, for what is my final Indian blog, and what a welcome return it was. It felt so nice to be back in familiar surroundings and know my way around it made for a very relaxing and easy going couple of days (who would of thought I would be saying that about the infamous Pahar Ganj just a couple months ago when I departed the UK!!!!!).
I had a relaxing day today just walking streets which were all being preapred for the big festival tomorrow of 'HOLI' (festival of colour). As a result of this the usual hassle and chit chat from the sellers was amiss which felt very surreal in these surroundings...... I decided that after the torment I had put my body through up in Nepal I would go and have a nice relaxing Indian Massage..... So I trotted along to a local place on Main Bazzar and in I went to a room with insense and candles burning in the background and some soothing music, quite a relaxing atmosphere which I guess you would expect for a massage. I stripped down to my boxers and lay on the table. Then it happened the soothing piped music finished and on came Backstreet Boys followed by the whistling and entry into the room of a guy wearing the tightest of t-shirts you could imagine...... Oh my god I did not realise I had signed up for the Indian Freddie Mercury to be doing my massage!!! The next hour or so was not so much relaxing as opposed to terrifying (bring back those bus journies in replacement for this anyday). I thought massages were supposed to be relaxing!!!!
The following day I ended up having a long overdue lie in, whcih was not really best day to be doing this given the big 'Holi Festival' was happening all over India this day. I went out onto street and was immediatley attacked by a couple of westerners and was painted in coloured powder which made me look more a piece of the action given everyone was doused in water and coloured powders. In early afternoon myself and Jules went back to hotel to meet a sikh guy called Raj who was a tour operator from our hotel and whom had invited us both to his house for Holi Dinner. He took us off onto metro and then onto a couple of cycle rickshaws to his house all of whcih was paid for by Raj. He was by no means a rich man in fact far from it in his small house (which he kept informing us it was) living with his wife and son and father all under same roof. This just went to show the kindness of this chap and Indians in general (those who are not after something that is.....) Once there we had a dinner of dahl and chappati and he told us all about himself, his family and his religion. He knew I was leaving the following day and he ehtered the room and told me he had a gift for me and handed me a decrotive wooden box containing Darjeeling Tea. He kept telling me not to say thankyou or sorry in his house as this was not the Indian way but given this mans generosity this was very hard to stick to..... WEhen it got later into evening he even offer to let us stay in his house, and this was a truly memorable bloke and a good way to end my 2 month journey in India with a positive reminder of what the Indian people are like.
Following day I said farewell to Jules and left Delhi 5 hours early for flight since in the traffic it is well known to have taken people a good couple hours to get to the airport. However this was a Sunday (which normally makes no differance in India) however this was a Sunday the day after the Holi Festival and therefore the roads were the quitest I had ever seen in India. I arrived at the airport after 30 mins in the taxi and then had a long wait at an airport which does not have a lot on offer!!! Lets see what my next installment brings in China.
Until then, Alvida from India.
