Had my first delayed flight on way to Singapore due to a passenger becoming ill on plane. They were calling on announcement for a Doctor and paramedics helped a guy off plane (and I thought I didnt like flying!). Arrived in Singapore late afternoon and took a metro to Chinatown where I was staying in a hostel. The metro was a long long journey and was not helped by the fact it was rush hour so they were jammed packed with commuters.......Doh. Once arrived at Chinatown took a lot of wandering around and asking people to find way to hostel. No problem with a language barrier here and place I found was very similar to that of Hong Kong, both scenary and prices!!!! The manager here was from Indonesia in his 20's and was a top top bloke. Spent the evening having a couple beers with him and chatting about OZ as he spent a few years studying here.
The next day I went to Funan Mall which is a massive electronics mall to buy a new camera, since I had managed to break my old one...... Really was a huge mall and contained every electronics item you could wish for. Laptops were pretty reasonable as well and had to resist the urge to buy one. After this I walked past the Raffles hotel and along Espionage which is where the big thearte is. This is Singapores equivalant of the Sydney Opera House and is a pretty impressive looking building. Carried walking along and visited the Merlion Statue (half fish half mermaid fountain). I then walked into the financial district and the buildings here were awesome. Big groiup of high rise buildings clustered into the area and clearly a lot of money floating around here, obviously I brought this image down a little so didn't hang around long!!! Went and got a nice cheap (yes still possible if you look around even in Singapore) meal in evening with a group of people also staying in hostel.
The next day I headed into town again with a Swedish guy who was staying at hostel. We went and viewed the Raffles statue and also the war memorial and just had a wander around. Then had to head back and find another hostel to stay in as my one was fully booked for the night and I had only booked for 2 nights as I th0ought I was supposed to be leaving today, turns out was next day! Luckily there was another hostel behind my one so went and booked in here. Chucked my bags in dorm and couple guys in here so asked where they were from and they said Brighton. I then said I was from Burgess Hill as I thought they would know area and turns out they were from Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath also!!!!!! Really bizzare being all the way out here and meeting people who I have probably bumped into on the pub before..... They were listing off names of people they knew and I was sayiung yep know them, really wierd!!!
That evening I spent over at other hostel and had beers until about 3am with the guys who were there and William the manager. Prob not a good idea since I had to be up at 6:30am for my flight to Vietnam!! Anyway managed to get up the next morning and got metro to Airport with Arvarad (Swede staying in hostel) who also had flight arounf same time. Once arrived at airport said farewell to Arvarad and headed off to get my Tiger Airways flight to Nam where I would meet up with Darren from back home.
Not really a lot to report from Singapore but I am coming back here in a few months so plan to see a bit more then. Now I was just really looking forward to getting into Vietnam and to see the crazy traffic I have been told so much about........
