Day 3 Los Angeles > Las Vegas
Got up early and headed out on the road at 7am. A few hiccups trying to get on to the connecting freeways heading west to Vegas, at one point the traffic was down to a standstill near San Bernardino put down to a crash between a car and a truck - guess who came off worst ?
Detoured off the interstate and did our first section of Route 66 from Victorville to Barstow , approx 26 miles of original paved road. Took lunch in the shade, a tasty pre made salad roll, bought from Walmart earlier on in the day where we stopped for travel provisions. Back onto the I15 with the temperature climbing to 100 deg. F as indicated on the car's temp gauge as we cruised at 75mph over the Mohave desert. Detoured west as we hit LV to Red Rock Canyon. The red sand stone was spectacularly lit up by the late afternoon sun as we traversed the 13 mile loop road. Back into Vegas and we drove the Strip down to the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign. Very busy here being Saturday evening and the town numbers being inflated by the droves of people from LA.
Checked in at the Stratosphere Hotel and took the free (complimentary to hotel guests) ride up to the top of the tower to enjoy the night time view. Back down to ground level and hailed a taxi up to Fremont St - jammed pack with convivial people enjoying all the action. Quenched on a margarita before we grabbed another cab back to the hotel and crashed to bed around 2 am.
A long day. Will attempt to upload some more pics as time and internet allows.
Cheers - Tony
