Today we left lovely Hells Gate and headed towards Lawn Hill. On the way we stopped at Doomadgee, an aboriginal town, for fuel and we went to the bakery and got morning tea and bread. We also got lost and drove past a house with a cow laying at the door of a unit and saw 4 or 5 horses roaming the streets. On the way we drove through Lawn Hill Station. We saw hundreds of cattle, huge eagles and we also saw a flock of emus so we stopped and they came within 20 meters of us, they were very curious and then they randomly ran away very fast ("she can't fly but I'm telling you she can run the pants of a kangaroo!)
Then we drove some more. The landscape was so dry and so flat and sometimes there would be random hills in the middle of nowhere. Then we arrived at a creek crossing where we had lunch. It was so nice to see water after such a dry landscape. There was one flowing clear creek and then land for ten metres and then another clear flowing creek that met downstream. It was only knee deep water so we could play and find rocks.
After that we arrived at the Lawn Hill caravan park, we set up and went down to Lawn Hill creek, it is spring fed. It was very deep and wide and pretty, with lilly pads all around the edges. There is also a pontoon, tiers and a tree you could jump out of or swing out of, it was a LOT of fun. We spent the whole afternoon down at the river. When we got back we went and got fire wood from over the fence and had a fire and listened to music. We had tea then went to bed because we were very tired.
The next morning we went down the road into Lawn Hill National Park and went to a gorge upstream from the part of the creek where we swam the day before. We got to hire canoes to paddle up the gorge. On the way up the river huge red sand stone walls formed the gorge. When we got up to the middle of the gorge we saw two small water falls but we had to keep going. We got the canoes out of the water and dragged them around to the top hole where it opened up and then it narrowed, and then went about 50 metres and opened up again. Then we stopped at the rapids which was the end of the wide creek and then turned around and went back because we were on a time schedule. When we got back we were so tired so we had lunch and a rest. Then went for a walk back to the middle pool and waterfall for a swim. We were the only people there for a while. We went under the mini water fall and we also jumped off it. The water was so clear and beautiful. Then we went back to the caravan park and went back down to the river to jump off the tree some more and had a lot of fun. Then we went back to the van and had a campfire and listened to music again.

Nannette and Poppy Den Gee, what a great day! Ha ha I love the reference to John Williamson's song "Old man Emu".
