A few notes about the Cassair Highway: This highway is a narrow country road type. Twists and turns, mountain steep grades. No lines, No breakdown lane, No berms and no shoulder. Throw in frost heaves and pot holes and total isolation. This was the longest stretch of nothingness on the whole trip. The Alaska Highway had a 300 mile stretch but 450 was our record. The Rockies on the left and the coastal mountains on the right. This path was also a contender for the Alaska Highway but was thought to be to close to the Pacific. (Japanese Accessible) This road was gravel until recently. With all that in mind we still wanted to go that way because of what others said about the beauty. It measured up to expectations for sure. In the 450 miles there were 3 communities, population 15 to 250 and a gas pump. $5.00/gal isn't bad, they have a bit of leverage. lol We would easily drive 10-30 minutes without seeing another vehicle. Our only communcations was the satellite phone. When you see one of our stops below "Jade City" it is not a city. lol It is a family that lives there and sells jade right from the mountain. My guess would be the city has a population of 15. No gas A film crew was there when we were filming eposodes of a new reallity show "Jade City". Note the notice in the pics.
KINISKAN LAKE
Friday, June 23,2017 Miles to next Stop: 176 miles
Leave at: 8:10 a.m. Temp.: 40 degrees
Saying for the day: Don't ruin a good day by thinking about a bad yesterday - LET IT GO!
It's a wonderful sunny day for a short drive. We see a lot more Barrow's Golden Eye ducks on the Good Hope Lake as we drive by. Mountains on each side of us, some still have snow, but we're seeing less and less on those mountain tops. It is summer now, after all.
There are lots and lots of beautiful purple wild flowers lining the road on both sides, almost like a welcome mat.
We make a stop at Jade City where they mine, cut and polish the raw jade. All very interesting to see. A film crew was there filming for a TV series called - of course - Jade City.
Saw a moose eating out on a small spit of Cotton Lake.
Arrive Kiniskan Lake, another beautiful lake for an overnight.
Had a great walk around the park and jus enjoyed the beauty all around us.

Saturday, June 24, 2017 Miles to next stop: 226 miles
Leave at: 7:50 a.m. Temp: 36 degrees
Saying of the day: If at first you don't succeed, try doing it the way Mom told you to in the beginning.
On our way a bit earlier than usual today, we have a few extra miles to go . Seeing beautiful snow capped mountains in the distance and the tall thin spruce trees growing tightly packed together.
Along the side of the road a little brown fox is daintily walking and paying us no attention at all.
Now we see that it's snowing heavily up on those mountain tops, it's never summer for them. And we're getting rain while they get the snow.
As we drive along a river it's just 'boiling' with rapid waters. A few beaver dams dot the river as well.
We start to see a lot of Queen Anne's Lace wild flowers; we're definitely getting to warmer climes now.
We start to see some black bears, but these aren't running away like the one the other day. In all we see 4 black bears, not together, but all spaced apart. Some of them were eating clover along the road. It's too early for the berries. We also saw a big fish lying in the road, darn, not a salmon or a halibut.
We arrive Cassiar RV Park at 12:40 It's cloudy and 61 degrees
Staying 1 night
