That morning we headed back to Hanoi for the final leg of the Vietnam tour. We had arranged to meet up with Alan & Carly (the Scottish couple from our Cambodia tour) that evening, so it was destined to be a messy one!! Stopping for lunch & a beer at Legend Beer (once I saw that there was no other choice) we snatched Haavard & Inger (the Norwegian couple) away from the group & prepared ourselves for an evening of potential carnage. A quick trip to Fanny Ice-cream (cue childish giggling for 30 seconds again), we set off to Alan & Carly's hotel so that we could leave a note in their lobby telling them when to meet us. Strangely, their hotel had no record of them staying there, so we left a note regardless. It turned out that they did stay there after all & thanks to our note, we met them ok. Heading out for dinner, we stumbled across another giggling inducing shop called COCK. Apparently it stood for Creative Oriental Crafts Kingdom!! Using our Lonely Planet book to find bars to visit, we noticed a couple of 'alternative' pubs in the area. Thinking that we could get some decent rock/indie music, we headed there & made the most of their happy hour beers. About half an hour into our visit we had noticed most of the clientel were male & a poster in the Gents toilets about AIDS pretty much made us realise that we were in a gay bar. Upon double checking the Lonely Planet guide, it turned out that 'alternative' means alternative lifestyle & not music!! After finishing our drinks we decided to find a new pub, although it took a bit of effort to convince Haavard, as he seemed to be connecting with his inner homo quite well!! We came across a bar called Funky Monkey & decided to go in......straight into a gay club!! We were fed up of walking, so opted to stay & just drink lots! Several Black Russians later (the drink, not men), the evening became a blur of dancing with random Vietnamese girls, getting behind the decks to help the DJ with his mix & more drinking. Soon it was time to head home. Hanoi at 2:30am makes all the streets look the same, so after fruitless walking, we figured we were lost & it was at this point that I realised I had left my bag at the club. We sent the Norwegians home in a taxi & then tried to find our way back to the club, which was going to be tricky seeing as we were more lost than Madelaine McCann!! After the foolishly drunken decision to split up, it turns out that Joel & Carly had the smart idea of waving down a moped to take them back to the club & retrieve my bag. Whereas myself & Alan walked around in circles, managing only to buy beer & cigarettes, & Alan getting his wallet pickpocketed, which was promptly returned to him after they realised it was empty. We headed back to their hotel, slightly dejected, but thankfully Joel & Carly were waiting for us, along with my bag. What a night!! We finally made it back to our hotel at 4:30am with a little help from a taxi.
