We have decided Cafe Cito is definitely our favorite restaurant in Puerto Escondido. We grabbed breakfast there and went and found a rental car. We wanted to explore some of the area. We headed through the city and spent some time shopping where the locals shop. We picked up a hammock and some other souvenirs. The streets were filled with produce, fresh fish, tortillas, as well as shoes, clothing and other necessities.
We headed out for an adventure, specifically the bioluminescent lagoon. Along the way, we were looking for a restaurant and secluded beach. We headed down a dirt road that advertised a BBQ restaurant and beach. We drove through a gorgeous ranch with cows, donkeys, and horses. It became relatively apparent that this was a bit of a trek, through rocks and over bridges and streams. We came upon another vehicle who warned us that other than a great dead end, we couldn't pass to the beach ahead. Not to be discouraged, Jeff pushed along and we shortly came upon a giant crocodile warning sign, as well as a suspicious looking crossing. We all got out of the car to make it a lighter load to go over the stone bridge. We saw a log that looked exactly like a crocodile but after throwing some apples at it, it didn't move. Sure enough, the road ahead was washed away and we couldn't cross over to the beautiful secluded beach ahead. We were all standing looking over, debating how we could get over when the water swirled and we saw what seemed to be crocodile eyes peering out of the reeds!!! We booked it out of there pretty quickly after that!! The bioluminescent lagoon was incredible! Our tour guide, Ulysses sits in a field just off the lagoon, and their restaurant consists of his wife firing up a small fire pit and grilling. The ride out to the bioluminescents plankton was full of wildlife, birds, and herons. No crocodiles supposedly. We got to the end of the lagoon and Ulysses encouraged us to swirl our hands in the water. Amazingly, every where your body touches the water, it produces a neon green glow, or a bioluminescent effect! Jeff and the kids hit the water and swam around. Pictures were hard to take, the light of the camera took away the effect. We've never seen anything like it! Definitely an incredible experience that none of us will forget. The stars from the lagoon were incredible, with little to no city lights in the area. We saw the Milky Way, as well as several constellations. It was a moonless night, which allowed Venus to shine brightly, casting a moon like sheen on the water. It was a magical night.
