For over 25 years we have wanted to snorkel or dive with the seals off Montague Island but the prospect of being shark bait has been a deterrent. To celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary we went on a Montague Island Eco Adventure, Guided lighthouse tour + Guided snorkel tour with Island Charters Narooma. Awesome experience.
We were lucky with the weather and sea conditions ... Narooma Bar is notorious as a dangerous crossing, yet today it was flat. Water visibility was about 25-30 metres and the water temperature about 23 degrees.
Our tour included a boat cruise around the Australian and New Zealand fur seal colonies, ranger guided tour of the light house and finished of with 30-45 minute snorkel and swim with the Australian seals.
We enjoyed the small group size, 10 passengers on our tour. Several other operators running at the same time as our trip had much larger groups.
We cruised around the Island viewing both Australian and New Zealand seals before disembarking at the jetty for a tour of the light house. (You can actually book overnight stays in the light house keeper cottages.) The light house and it's history is interesting. The initial climb is a bit steep and the leg muscles get a good, but short, work out.
Back on board our boat we headed to a quiet area to anchor and snorkel with the seals. The seal pups in particular, are so curious and will swim right up to you. One of our tour group had one seal pup playing tug-of-war and fetch with a piece of kelp. Just amazing to watch.
Thank you Island Charters Narooma for such an amazing experience.
