We are Sailing
well, i am back on air again. had a few issues with my xoom. I bought a sim card, but i read the instructions, and quite frankly it all seemed Greek to me. Consequently, nothing worked.
anyway, Cheryl and i got a good nights sleep and got up early to go and see the Acropolis. We had agreat breakfast at the hotel, and off we went. Going early also meant we would miss the heat.
A brisk 15 min walk and we were there. We were gobsmacked, what a fantastic site. Hard to believe it was built 400BC. It is nearly as old as me. Today, we have modern tools to build with, yet I doubt we could achieve the quality of craftsmanship the ancient Greeks achieved. Unbelieveable, and certainly a highlight for me. The Greeks are really cranky at Lord Elgin taking their marbles, and to be honest I don't blame them.
After spending a considerable time at the Acropolis, we went back to the Hotel, and caught up with Brian & Diane.
We then decided to get the hop hop off bus tour. The tour was excellent, it is a quick way to look around, and get a feel of the place. Saw all the major landmarks, and everyone was worth seeing. Once we finished the bus tour, we went to the National gardens for a quick lunch. On the way out we were lucky enough to see the changing of the guards outside the presidential palace. Quite hillarious really, these guys dressed up in tights wearing shoes with fluffy pom poms on them. They also managed to copy John Cleeses silly walk. A good bit of entertainment.
We left there and walked back to the National museum which was next to our Hotel. I can see why Greece is broke. This place was very new, and it would have cost an absolute fortune to build. But it is very, very good, and I am happy that I had the opportunity to see it, as it put everything into perspective, and made our tours more meaningful.
By the time we had done all this we were quite exhausted.(mainly because Athens is all uphill. Don't think I went downhill once......well so it seems) We all went back to the hotel, went up to the roof top garden, and relaxed. Brian and Diane managed to bring a few bottles of their latest vintage, which is very good. I had coke zero, because my stomach is still a bit dicey. Never mind, everybody else enjoyed it.
We cleaned up, and went and found another place to eat in the Plaka. Most peopple seem to eat around 9.00pm, so I figured if I didn't stop going to bed at my normal bedtime, I was going to starve.
We have already planned out tomorrow, so another big day.
