We are Sailing
Our stay in Paris had come to an end, and we were sad to leave our little apartment on Rue Turbigo. It was a great pick up by Dianne through AirBNB.
We intended to get to CDG by 10.30am so there was no time to mess around. The internal carriers have a lighter load limit that the International carriers. Cheryl and I knew we were ok with space to spare. This was good because we were able to move the kitchen sink from Dianne's bag to mine. It also meant Brian had a greater than even chance of being actually able to move her bag. I UBERED a car in good time, and once again the service was special. It was fortunate we gave ourselves plenty of time, as there was a crash on the freeway, and fortunately the UBER man was able to divert via a few back roads to the airport.
We made it in good time, and were able to check in without any problem. Finally we were off to Split. We flew EasyJet, and the flight only took and hour and 44 minutes. When we arrived we were met by a Maxi Van, organised by our AirBNB man, to take us to the apartment, overlooking the bay in Split. You can't fault the apartment, or the views it offers. But like anything good there is always a catch! In this case the 169 stairs to get to the front door. We need the exercise, so we can't complain.
After settling in, Dianne and Brian took us down town to show us the sites. Having been here a few times, they know place quite well.
It was very hot when we arrived, and very humid. The City and the Bay which it surrounds are certainly very pretty. Split was originally settled by the Greeks in about 1700 BCE, then the Romans moved in, and all throughout its life it has had many owners. My Google translator tells me that there is an annual ceremony of the Rates, and it is only when this notice comes in on the 1st July, that the residents know which country they belongs to.
The first thing I noticed about Split was the local girls. They all seem to be very tall and slim. I thought there must be a reason for this, so I googled it. It is just as I thought. There was a breeding program started by the Greeks. All the girls in future had to be tall and slim. The reason for this was quite rationale. The girls when they did there daily shopping had to fit into the very narrow laneways that were being constructed. I have enclosed a picture for you. These laneways are banned to tourists for safety reasons.
After our tour of the sites, we found this great restaurant at the bottom of the lane our unit is on. I have to say, I tasted the best grilled squid I have had in years. The girls finished their meals and left early.(in all fairness Dianne is still recovering from the flu, and I think she has made a great effort to get this far) Brian and I were left to do the cleaning up. I must say we did a great job, there was nothing left of that litre of house red by the time we had finished.
Hard to believe we are her now, and we are looking forward to picking up the boat on Saturday.
