Today we set off early to visit the Great Wall of China, Nick had done some research and found we could get there by metro and then bus for a fraction of the cost of the organized tours. Managed the metro bit ok but then when we tried to get on the bus they didn't want us too and kept on pointing us to a different bus which had a different number. In the end we gave up and got on the bus which was very full so we figured wherever it was going was going to be popular so it wouldn't be all bad. Miraculously 1 ½ hours later we arrive at the Great Wall which is pretty spectacular. Set off walking up the wall which was pretty hard going as it is so steep in places. Two hours later and we are still walking up steep hills and then down even steeper hills and I thought to myself why on earth did they make it so difficult by building it over a mountain range surely it would be easier to build it on the flat and then it would be much more pleasant for us tourists!! When I voiced these thoughts to Nick he looked at me in amazement and started talking about wars and defense and how it's easier to defend from above (WHATEVER!!!) Still think they should have built it on the flat they could use it for much more things then like bike rides or marathons.
