We have arrived in the jungle. Travelled by boat to our lodge which is a duel purpose hut. During the dry season it is a hut in the jungle. During the current wet season it is a floating hut on the Rio Negro as the river covers the forest. It is pretty amazing even though there's no electric. Spent the afternoon piraña fishing, Nick caught 1 and our guide Manuel caught 14 (no contest). After dinner the itinerary said alligator watching. In practice this meant "we will take you on a little boat after dark into the jungle. When we get there me and my mate will run off with a machete each to catch alligator for you! Note to self: really must learn Portuguese for "honestly don't bother on my account". They returned 90 minutes later with 2 baby alligators which were thankfully alive. The jungle is relatively quiet in the day but comes alive at night, not sure how much sleep we will get as they have forgotten to finish the roof off on our hut!
Animals seen today:
1 monkey
15 pirañas (all dead)
2 bats
2 alligators
1 dolphin
1 huge spider
