Day 5 on boat and we have finally reached Belem our destination. We have travelled over a 1,000 miles from the Brazilian start of the Amazon to the Atlantic. This is the equivalent of the length of the UK twice and it is completely covered in forest. It does make you understand why the majority of Brazilians to not understand why cutting down parts of the forest is not environmentally sound when there is so much of it! It is impossible to imagine the scale of it until you are here.
We are due to fly from Belem tonight but have been warned by all not to go into the city as it is not safe and is full of thieves so we travelled straight to the airport. Decided to check my bank account on the internet only to find it has been cleared out by someone in Brazil! Our credit card was suspended by the bank last week as they don't like what I'm spending so we had no means of obtaining money. Finally managed to get hold of the bank and have had my credit card unblocked but have had to cancel debit card. Thought we were being clever by avoiding thieves but were robbed anyway! Should be more worried about the thieves on the internet not the ones roaming the cities!
