We broke our time in Delhi with a visit to Shimla. Vanda's weather forecast app suggested it would be warm in the daytime and cool at night, won't use that app again. It was very cold. We took an overnight sleeper train to Kalka, sleeper it wasn't. Either the train's horn, a party elsewhere in our carriage or one of our neighbours snoring meant little sleep was had. From Kalka we took the narrow gauge "toy train" up into the mountains to Shimla. The train climbs about 1000m through tunnels and across bridges as it winds its way up the mountain for 5 hours. We stayed at the Hotel White, very friendly and attentive staff - who quickly provided a fan heater a d offered hot water bottles (hotel has no heating). We had so many bedclothes that you nearly got squashed. Shimla is a lovely quaint town. Built by the British as a retreat from the summer heat of Delhi it has lots of colonial buildings built up the sides of the mountain. There is a lot of excitement here as Bollywood are here filming a new blockbuster! Adoring fans jam the town square hoping for a glimpse of their favourite stars. Makes for fun people watching. The local authorities have banned plastic bags in the town and it has really helped reduce the amount of litter dumped a long the roads and paths. Amazingly they have also banned smoking in all public places, including outside! And it has worked, we didn't see anyone smoking in three days! Spitting is also banned and it was a treat to walk around without hearing locals clear their throats and spit in the gutter! It was nice to walk in the fresh air (a lot of the streets are pedestrianised so no worry about getting run down by tuk tuks etc - just the odd cow to walk around) We had a good workout as it is soooo hilly. And it keeps you warm -especially when we had a snow flurry! We had a good time (despite the cold) - it's very peaceful compared to Delhi and a good break from the chaos. Took the toy train back to Kalka, this time on the 1st class express including meals (all for £4.50 each).. Afternoon tea at Shimla then soup and curry halfway down the mountain. Very British approach. Sleeper train back to Dehli was better, no parties and quieter snorers. =-O
