We left Corbett National Park on the Corbett express train, less grand than it sounds. An overnight train, we took sleeper class again £4.50 for the two of us. Arrived in Jaipur 14 hours later, a little tired but a fun way to travel. You get a good idea of the real India on the trains , the sights and smells of the residential areas that back onto the railways are an assault on all the senses at once. Amazing where people will toilet - in full view of people on the trains! .... When watching films on TV they silence out when characters swear; fog over nudity and put banners across the screen, telling us that smoking is injurious to health whenever a cigarette appears on screen, but people are happy to bare their arse and crap anywhere! In Jaipur we stayed at the Pearl Palace Heritage hotel, just as posh as it sounds. And all the facilities worked, unusual for India. A lovely place where we had slippers and dressing gowns supplied! All for £28 a night! Well we thought we deserved a treat. This hotel will feature in the sequal to the best exotic marigold hotel film. We enjoyed breakfast served in our room with the morning papers. Jaipur is a faded city, the pink has somewhat faded to an orange hue. But it has some fantastic historic sites. Our favourite was the Gaitor (royal cenotaphs) complex, not on the normal tourist circuit and only a small place but it has some of the most fantastically detailed marble carving! We also visited the Amber fort complex covering the hilltop and Jaigarh fort that has, what they claim to be, the world's largest cannon on wheels. The cannon was cast in the 1600's and is huge. They still have the mould and the lathe that made the cannon, there's not much new in the technology. Jaipur traffic is the most amazing yet. Imagine a dual carriage way, one lane each way. Add pedestrians, bicycles, cycle rickshaws, scooters, autorickshaws, buses and trucks. Then add ox-drawn carts, camel-drawn carts and elephants! Utter chaos, and if one carriageway is blocked by all of this then you just use the other carriageway in the wrong direction!! But most importantly the horn must be used at every opportunity!!!! And most amazingly we have yet to see an accident!!!!!!! This is India. Love to all.
