Corbett national park is the oldest in India, started by a big white hunter made good. A huge area in the foothills of the Himalayas offering protection to wildlife. We wanted to get there by train but couldn't get tickets so hired a car and driver, took 6 hours to cover 250 km on incredibly busy poor roads. There was a terrible storm on our first night and we feared a wash out but the next morning the sun shone. We set off for the forest In a little Suzuki jeep and started spotting deer immediately. We stayed in a forest lodge house, built by the Brits but now rather tired, but in an amazing location in the middle of the forest overlooking a large dam, with crocodiles, turtles and lots of birds. After lunch we headed off for a safari that largely consisted of sitting in the Jeep near where the guides thought the tiger might be. The grass is still very long in the park and the Jeeps are not allowed off the tracks so even if they know the tigers are in the grass we can't see them. They didn't show. Next day up at 6.15am on another safari and we waited again but then decided to look elsewhere, saw lots of deer and some lovely scenery, the tigers showed while we were away! After lunch we took an elephant safari, which was great fun - the elephants are allowed in to the long grass and the tigers aren't spooked by them. We enjoyed a nice relaxing trek on lumbering Laxmi (55 years old) and found the tigers' lunch remains but they had snuk off during our lunch break! Next morning another safari and more waiting........and this time they showed! Only down side Craig was still at the forest lodge with a dose of the s***s! So Vanda can claim to have seen a tiger in the wild but not Craig. We both really enjoyed our time in Corbett but Craig is a bit sore in more ways than one!
