We would love to bring you some new adventurous news, but the fact is that the last few days we have been goofing around like two onetrackminded goldfishes, swimming back and forth back and forth pretty amazed by all the new discoveries we found within our nearest perimeter. Every day in Paramaribo was like: hmmm... have you seen that before? Yet the fact remained that we walked the same way, ate the same things at the same restaurant and drank free alcohol at the very same casino every day for four consecutive days. Makes us proud to be that innovative on vacation.
Paramaribo was a cool city, but we had to move on and next stop was gonna be Georgetown, Guyana where we currently are. We met a guy, who called a guy, who knew a guy, who was told about a guy, that might or might not be driving to Georgetown the next morning. After several phonecalls we managed to arrange a shuttle to the borderferry and onto Georgetown. The minibus was much so full, the driver had to play Tetris with the luggage and the live stock. Suddenly we were all shuffeled around in a very small and confined space. This was gonna be a comfortable busdrive... Luckily we had a constantly crying baby to keep us awake as the bus moved forward, faster than the speed of light during the night. Finally at the border, the ferry snailed over the river from New Nickerie to Corriverton.
Arriving Guyana with no money, we noticed that the driver who was s'posed to meet us on the other side had already left with a full minibus. Suddenly all drivers at location became the man who was originally s'posed to meet us. After some bullying between the different drivers, two dodgy and pretty rough looking fellows told us they would take us to Georgetown for free. Excellent we thought, and climbed into their vehicle without hesitation. From their looks you would presume they were listening to gangster rap or something similiar, but no no... All of a sudden best of RnB love songs boomed out of the soundspeakers... Awesome... It didn't help when one of the guys also started to sing along with Mariah Carey's penetrating voice. After a while they did however ask us if we enjoyed the music and upon the spoons answering no, they quickly switched to reggaeton. NOOOOOO!!! Four intense hours later we arrived our desired hotel in Georgetown. Package delivered as promised without payment.
Now, apparently Georgetown is the most dangerous city in South-America and we feel the urge to quote Lonely Planet: "Unfortunately the rumours are true. Georgetown is dangerous. Period. Street crime, often violent, is common even in broad daylight. Don't walk anywhere alone, carry next to nothing and wear nothing of value - not even flash trainers. Don't walk anywhere at night; even locals take cabs two blocks from their homes. Electricity blackouts are quite frequent, and street lighting is poor at the best. Never enter the Tiger Bay area, avoid Middle Street between Main and Waterloo Streets, and stay outof Promenade Garden."
So... how did the spoons deal with this? As a starter our chosen hotel is situated next to the Tiger Bay area. Having settled in we went to the closest ATM in Middle Street between Main and Waterloo and withdrew some cash. Then we went for a stroll in Promenade Garden. Our conclusion? Georgetown is a lovely city, quite beautiful with lively and friendly people. Where the people in French Guiana had the personalities of sucked-dry lemons, the people here are smiling, making jokes and laughing all the time. Yes, the city is not safe in some areas, but it was worse a couple of years ago. It is true however that you shouldn't walk around at night... but daytime is harmless if you take the necessary precautions. And... listen to the locals, some areas are indeed dangerous. Don't eat pizza at Mario's, it tastes horrible and only achieved to make two spoons very nauseous. Beer is dirt cheap, about 1-2 USD. So as you can see, overall the spoons are very happy in Georgetown.
But one question remains, where's the spoons next destination? We know, but do you? One thing is for sure, we're urging for some beach... Been over 4 weeks since we last saw one. Make a guess where we end up!? To be continued...
