Wills and James Road Trip
Day Twenty 03.04.05
We met a couple, Mick and Sarah and their children Elizabeth and Liam from Exeter yesterday and went for a glass of wine in the evening. We had good conversation and the wine was free flowing. They have spent some time living in Surbiton (Small world!) where Sarah taught at Lady Immaculate School and Mich was a driving instructor at Codeway near the station.. All in all it was an enjoyable evening putting the world to rights.
In the morning we set off with a vague plan to stay near Bilbao, James wants to go to the Guggenheim as much to see the architecture as to view the contents. We again decided to follow the coast road rather than use the motorway. It was a bit twisty but William did a great job keeping us on the road. It was strange to all of a sudden realise we were in Spain and the only real indication was the number plates on the cars, no welcome to Spain board or anything. There were load of cyclists on the route, most looked like amateurs but a few were in teams with back up cars. We think there was some sort of race happening but we're not sure.
Spain is very different from France in this area. It is much more industrial and it seems as though the buildings were built for function not appearance. There is also an absence of small shops to get provisions and also not many supermarkets. There are plenty of Tapas bars around but most looked closed (probably because its Sunday)
We drove into Bilbao which is very busy and passed the Guggenheim (Can't wait to go inside!) It was about 2pm and we needed to find somewhere to stay so we headed back out of town to explore the countryside. It would appear that camping is not so popular as it is in France. We found ourselves in a village where we had spotted a map board. James got out to survey and see if there were any sutes nearby. Whilst looking he was accosted by an old man who sounded as though he was trying to help. A few minutes later James realised neither of us had a clue what the other was talking about and made his exit. The board showed one campsite in Sopelana and off we went. Leaving the bemused man wondering what we were up to.
The campsites fine although it does look over a coastal council estate and we have a sneaking suspicion that most of the residents are permanent. Beggers can't be choosers! The beach is within walking distance which we explored. It's a bit of a surfers haven and the crowd is very young and trendy.
