Wills and James Road Trip
Day Nineteen 2.04.05
Inspired by Bill we had a lovely fruit salad for breakfast, James had to put yoghurt on his because some of the fruit was a bit sour and gave him chicken skin.
We had read lots about Bayonne which is a city near Biarritz it wasn't too far and as the weather had turned to be overcast we thought a bit of window shopping would cheer us up. We used the park and ride scheme and although it meant leaving the van very much in the hinterland it was easier than driving into the centre. The free bus was very efficient and took us right to the centre, it was also a bit like a free city tour as well and meant we got our bearings very quickly.
Bayonne is a large city but it has retained many old buildings. The narrow streets are filled with bars, restaurants and boutique shops. There was an air of calm as much of the centre is inaccessible to vehicles and we walked through a market which seemed a bit like a car boot sale but with stalls not car boots obviously nothing to buy but interesting none the less.. Most of the buildings are about six storeys high and have distinctive shutters painted in either dark green or russet red.
We decided to have lunch in Restaurant Victor Hugo and although the service was a bit poor the food was excellent. William went for a dish which surprised both of us as he didn't have a clue what it was. When it arrived I could see the look of relief on William's face when it wasn't fish head stew but pork chops with chips and salad. James was just a bit jealous and promises to be more adventurous.
Whilst in the restaurant it started to rain which meant window shopping all of a sudden wasn't so appealing. We found where we had got off the park and ride bus (assuming it was a circular route) and hopped on. When we got to the end of the line and everybody else got off we realised our mistake and waited for the bus to depart back to the other end of the line to where the car was parked. This allowed us to see even more of the city than we expected and also revisit a few bits we had seen already.
Thank you to everybody who has sent messages, a particular mention must go to Emma, Colin, Michael, Dean and Reilly for there adventure at Tesco, we're looking forward to the next instalment.
Also we have managed to put a few picture on today to have a look if you want to.
