We decided to give the credit card a bit of a whacking and book a 3 day 2 night tour to Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world!! You can go over and drive yourself but you have to have a 4WD as its all sand and apparantly its quite hardcore driving! So we gladly booked ourselves on a tour!!
We got picked up in this green bus and were quite happy to find that there were only 13 other people on the tour, and everyone seemed really happy! We made our way to the ferry and it took about an hour to get over to Fraser Island, on the way we saw dolphins swimming about! When we arrived at the Island our driver Kirk said be ready for a rough ride...and as soon as we came off the ferry we knew what he meant!! We were being thrown about all over the place!!!
Our first stop was a beautiful lake called Lake Allom and there were loads of little turtles swimming about, everyone went in for a dip, it wasnt exactly that warm but quite refreshing! We then had lunch and everyone on the tour bonded, there were a couple from Beckenham Paul and Zoe, a couple from manchester Claire and Lawrence, a german couple andreas and , a really young couple from germany aswell, steph and jonas, a english guy called simon, a scottish guy called ranald and hanni a german girl!!
Next we stopped to look at a giant sandblow that is gradually making its way across the island, then we headed down to 75 mile beach which was fantastic, its like the main highway of Fraser Island, we whizzed along past other big 4WDs. We came to Eli Creek which was a fast flowing freshwater stream that goes into the sea, we all waded up there and then just floated down stream again!!! It was great fun! Then we went to a shipwreck on the sea that just looked so odd but spectacular, apparantly it was huge at one point but has gradually sunk over the years! We got some good pics and then made our way to cathederal beach where we were to stay for the night. We had nice wooden floor tents, and had a really good meal cooked for us, probably the most we have eaten for a long time!! We spent the evening drinking and chatting with everyone!
The next day we had to get up quite early but got a really nice cooked breakfast and made our way off at about 8am, our driver Kirk said he was going to take us to a really amazing beach so we were all excited. We drove along the beach and then as we were going to drive inland the coach got completely bogged in the soft sand!! We all got off the bus and the guys tried to push the bus out of the sand. It was quite bad and we got stranded there for nearly an hour trying to dig the bus out!! There was a family in a little 4WD stuck aswell!! We all cheered when finally the bus got out!! We went to Wathumba creek, the weather was pretty grim, it looked like it was going to rain at any moment. We got out the bus and followed Kirk down to the beach....it was amazing. The sand was white and the water was turqiouse and really calm. There were trees sticking out of the water and hardly anyone else there, it was great!! We all kept following Kirk and waded through a deep creek and then a really muddy bog until we reached an even nicer beach! Apparantly it was OK to swim in this bit (you cant usually swim in the sea as there are sharks!!) we spotted a stingray and floated around in the lovely water, it started to rain but we were wet anyway!!! We went back after a while and had lunch, the sun came out for a bit and the guys tried to do a bit of fishing! Our next stop was champagne pools back on the east side of the island, because the weather was a bit rough the rockpools that are supposed to be really calm were really rough and choppy! Despite the weather most of our group went in and had a splash about!! Next we went up Indian Head where we got a lovely view over 75 mile beach and saw a huge ray in the water beneath us!
On the way back to the tents we saw a wild dingo, it looked really cute but they are apparantly quite aggresive! We had dinner and then went out to an aboriginal owned camp just down the beach, we sat around the campfire and were shown some dances and didgereedoo playing which was nice. We drove back along the beach to our camp but on the way Kirk stopped and showed us the stars, they looked amazing as there was no light pollution ruining the view! Then he said theres even stars on the beach when its overcast...and started to do the moonwalk, we thought he was being crazy and then he told us to look at his feet and as he was moonwalking there were sparkes coming out of the sand!! Apparantly its the phosphurus in the sand! Soon we were all moonwalking along the beach!!!!
The next day we got up early again and went to another massive sandblow, we trekked across it and soon came to Lake Wabby which is another lovely lake. We all went in for a swim and swam across to the other side which was quite kanckering for us!!! There were loads of catfish in the lake. We then had a bit of a walk through a forrest to get back to the bus. Everyone was quite knackered so were really happy when we were taken to a place called Happy Vale for some goumet pizzas!! We all stuffed our faces! Then we all piled back on the bus and went to Lake Garawongera, some of our group went for a swim but we just relaxed, it was lovely and peaceful!! After that we made our way to the ferry but on the way we stopped at a lovely rainforest and had a walk through, it was lovely and amazing how it had grown out of sand!! Finally we got to the ferry and we both felt a bit sad that the trip was over! We decided to meet up with everyone in the evening for a drink in Hervey Bay which was lovely.
We are so glad we decided to go to Fraser Island and think it may have been one of the best places we've been in Oz so far and we were really blessed with a great tour guide and really easygoing people on the tour!! We had a great time!!!
