We have reached the historical port town of Melaka and first impressions are really satisfying but we had a bit of an adventure getting here!!!
We left Singapore at 13.30 on a pre-booked bus from Kovan Bus Terminal which was direct. We arrived at the Singapore immigration and we were told to get off and make our way through. As usual this was really well organised and we got our bus on the other side. The bus took us over the causeway and we had to get off with our luggage to get through the Malaysian immigration. This took 1/2 hour and when we got through we waited for our bus. We must've waited for a good one and a half hours and it dawned on us that the bus had left us. We were both a bit peaved off as we had no Malaysian money, no clue how to get to Malaka and we had paid the company 36SD for the pleasure!!! We met a really nice englishman who advised us to go to JB Bus terminal from where we could get a bus to Malaka. We were thankful and got on the next bus. The bus terminal was a bit like an Indian Bus station but more organised and less smelly, with no sign of beggars!!! Our bus was really nice and A/c as standard and took us direct in 3 hours. The roads where straight and very smooth and we could only imagine the same journey in Indian would've been double the time.
We arrived in Malaka and got a taxi to our hostel. It's really nice, very homely with lots of areas to relax and chill. The owner Mr Lee is very chatty and made us feel at home. We decided to go out and grab some food from a massive open air food market. Our chicken Ellie pointed out it was offal so we left it and ate the noodles.
Next day we went out to discover, but as I woke up late we had limited time. We went to a mall and had some lunch, followed by starbucks and then saw some sights. We decided to hire a trikshaw (which are elaboratly decorated in flowers) the next day as they take you on 1 hour journeys. We love Malaka so far and can't wait for our day tommorrow.
We managed to get out early and got a trikshaw to take us around, our driver was an old dude who wore aviator sunglasses, and had no teeth. We thought he looked a bit like a snake! He started peddling and put on some Rod Stewart music, which blared out for everyone to stare at us!! He took us around Chinatown, we saw the oldest Mosque in Malaysia which had English and Chinese architecture, we went in a Chinese temple which we found really interesting. There were some tiger god statues in one part and one of the statues had a big pork chop hanging out of its mouth! People bring food offererings to the Tiger Gods for them to protect them. We also saw a man painting a very detailed stone tablet with little Chinese symbols. We got a bit worried at one part of our tour when the driver bought us to a shop, we suddenly thought oh no commission shop just like back in India, but to our surprise it was a shop selling little Chinese shoes (the ones the Chinese ladies used to cripple their feet to wear) and the owner was happy enough just to let us take a picture and didnt even try and sell us anything!!! So refreshing! We really enjoyed Melakka, the way there is Chinese, Dutch, British and Portugese buildings all mixed together. There was a really good feeling about the place!
Next stop Kuala Lumpar...........
